What is a thermostat?

A thermostat is a switch that turns the heating on and off depending on the room temperature. Thermostats are often mistaken for a heat dial, that when turned up high, quickens the time it takes to heat a room. However, when used correctly, thermostats eliminate energy waste by overheating.

How to balance underfloor heating with a thermostat

Balancing an underfloor heating system involves timing how long it takes for a room to heat up and cool down. You can then use this information to devise the optimal heating schedule for your home. Use the tips below to balance your heating system.

  1. On a cold evening, time how long it takes for your underfloor heating system to warm up to a comfortable temperature – this will be your warmup time.
  2. Next, switch the heating system off, and time how long it takes for the room or area to become cold.
  3. With these two figures, you can calculate an accurate timing schedule for your underfloor heating system. If it takes 30 minutes to reach 20°C, for instance, you can set the heating to activate half an hour before you get out of bed or arrive home from work.

Where is the best location for a thermostat in an underfloor heating system?

It is best to place your thermostat in a location where it can receive a free flow of air to establish an accurate reading for balancing your heating system. It is also crucial that household items do not obstruct the thermostat; therefore, it is best to fit it in a clear space away from wall decor and furniture. Lastly, ensure that your thermostat is not near any other heat sources like log burners or gas fires.
